The year was 2014. Blackpoint Cyber’s founder and CEO, Jon Murchison, had 12 years of US Department of Defense cyber operations under his belt and he wanted to build an effective cyber security platform that would finally allow defenders to visualize threats in real-time and take a true response to stop them. Armed with this idea, he and a few select team members spent 3.5 years building out Blackpoint’s flagship product SNAP-Defense; the industry’s first security operations and incident response platform that not only provides real-time asset visibility in an easy-to-digest network map, but most importantly allows for a defender to take action when they are being attacked.

Originally, SNAP-Defense was available as a proprietary product that organizations could purchase for their own Security Operation Centers (SOCs) and security teams to utilize – but Blackpoint quickly found out that most organizations don’t have their own SOCs or the personnel to monitor, detect, and respond to threats in a timely manner. At the same time, the team recognized that the Managed Service Provider (MSP) sector had a dire need for a fully managed cyber security offering. Blackpoint Cyber launched its 24/7 Managed Detection and Response service in 2018, utilizing its own SOC and software to service the MSP channel exclusively.

Blackpoint Cyber also features its Networked Industrial Control Operations Security (NICOS) module, addressing the growing trend of convergence between IoT, ICS, and OT networks. When paired with SNAP-Defense, NICOS provides the first truly integrated IT/OT threat detection and response platform, capable of detecting and stopping both IT and OT attacks as well as those that cross the boundary.
